Biography

The Word Is A Bird

Some say silence is golden
But silence is shit
'Cause words can hit
But they can heal
They can liberate us from what we feel
'Cause mazwi acho akasimba
Anogona kutibatsira kwatirikuenda
'Cause words are warriors
And their great gifts are glorious
But politicians wanna sell us words that are worthless
Creating a populace that's wordless
Throwing curse upon curse on the word's carcass
But the word is a bird and birds fly regardless
Flying above the durawalls of their so-called silence
The word still heard above their virile violence
'Cause you can bomb the word but you can't keep it silent

MaStreets
Walking the Streets every day
No job, no pay
From City to Msasa
Zvikhanzi ‘hapana basa’
How would you feel
If you got a raw deal
No school, no university
No job, no opportunity
Let them come down here
See what it’s like year after year
They put on cocoa butter
While we spread out in the gutter
Ivovo vane dzimba
Isusu tine Chapomba
Ivovo vanoenda ku Stars
Isu tinoatengesa

We try to hustle
They call us criminal
We sell drugs
They call us thugs
Asi we struggling to get by
While they sit high in the sky
These Borrowdale crooks, high class tsotsis
Give us dirty looks but they the real thieves
They live in comfort ‘cause of our sweat
They live in credit ‘cause of our debt
They drive Hummers and live in luxury
Thanks to the povo, thanks to the misery
Asi inzwa ka shamwari
They are few, we are many
Vari madhara, tiri mayouth
And the rot can never stop the truth
I said the rot can never stop the truth
I said the rot can never ever ever ever ever
The rot can never stop the truth

Because you wanna chain me, you wanna contain me
You wanna chop off my head and de-brain me
You want me to develop this ‘Yes Comrade’ mentality
All in the name of your supposed ‘unity’
Well listen, shamwari,
My one desire’s to be free
So though you control the police, the army, the media, the TV
And most society
You can’t control the heart of humanity
You can’t control desire for equality
That reverberates within me
And every single shamwari in this country
‘Cause you can beat my body but my mind will be free
Said you can beat our bodies but our minds will be free

Like a Riot

Sometimes on this path called life
Some things get sacrificed
We go without freedom in order to fight for it
We go without water in order to die for it
We lose our words so we know our silence
We lose peace so we fight violence
We face death so we appreciate life
We fight for equality when surrounded by strife
We see pollution and believe in nature
The world’s fucked up so we make it better
‘Cause we need to consume to realise its emptiness
We need a boss to realise his worthlessness
We need the world for sale so we realise its pricelessness
We need to live through capitalism so we can build alternatives

But to live a day without your touch
Well that’s asking too much
‘Cause I need you like a riot needs a petrol bomb
I love you like a freedom fighter loves freedom
I need you like a bottle store needs to break laws
Like capitalism needs wars
I need you like struggle needs Nehanda
Like mbira loves ngoma
Like art loves inspiration
Like destruction craves creation
I need your power, your lips
Your philosophies your hips
Your strength, your beauty
Your love, your poetry
Your fire, your desire
Your body, your energy
